Deploying VSTA-enabled on earlier WinOS versions (previous to WinXP, SP2)

Question:

The VSTA walkthrough specifies Windows XP (SP2) or later as operating system.  Is it strictly necessary?  Many ISV's customers still use earlier Windows Operating Systems like Windows 2000.  Can these customers use a VSTA-enabled application?

Answer:

The VSTA team at Microsoft informs us that there is no known technical reason that VSTA is not supported for earlier WinOS versions < XP (SP2).

The reason Microsoft specifies XP, SP2 or later is that they have not included earlier OS versions in their QA/testing.

If you, the ISV, integrate VSTA into your application and wish to support customers with earlier WinOS versions, you may test/verify your VSTA-enabled application on the earlier OS versions in question yourself and choose to support them.  We expect VSTA to function properly.  However, you must provide the test coverage for your application on WinOS versions < XP(SP2).
